Daytona 500 Review: After Ten Years of Absence, Wood Brothers Return to Victory Lane in Thrilling Fashion

After Ten Years of Absence, Wood Brothers Return to Victory Lane in Thrilling Fashion

By: Rachel Trimm

The record books were rewritten at the Daytona International Speedway on Sunday. In only his second Spring Cup Series start, rookie Trevor Bayne from Knoxville, Tennessee became the youngest driver in NASCAR history to win the Daytona 500. The 20 year old Bayne eclipsed the record set by four time Sprint Cup Series Champion Jeff Gordon. Gordon won the Great American Race for the first time at age 25 in 1997.

During Daytona Speedweeks, the world saw the emergence of a brand new style of racing at the historic speedway. Two cars lined up nose to tail achieved speeds a full 10 MPH faster than a car making a single run around the 2.5-mile tri-oval track. The newly paved track surface allowed competitors to occupy the entire track surface, often running three-wide down the backstretch taking advantage of the newly found grip. During Speedweeks and also during the Daytona 500, racing looked more like what fans are used to seeing at Daytona’s sister track, Talladega Super Speedway. Going into the race, there was an expectation of chaos and that’s exactly what ensued.

Kurt Busch led the field to the green flag as the pole sitter Dale Earnhardt Jr. dropped to the rear after being relegated to his backup car due to his accident involving the #56 car of Martin Truex Jr. on Wednesday.

On lap 3, NASCAR observed a moment of silence in remembrance of the fallen NASCAR hero, Dale Earnhardt Sr. on the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. On lap 4, the silence ended as Kyle Busch’s #18 car went spinning. Busch, who had been drafting with the #15 car of two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip was able to keep his car from hitting any walls or other vehicles, and reported over his radio that Waltrip had not hit him.

“I got loose in the turn.” Busch said over the radio to crew chief Dave Rogers. Busch was able to recover and finished the race 8th.

Hendrick Motorsports had a difficult day at the track. Three of the team's four cars were taken out of contention for the checkered flag by a massive 14 car pile up on lap 29. Michael Waltrip getting into the back of his teammate David Reutiman in #00 car triggered the melee. Reutiman spun sideways and collected several cars as he slid down the banking. Johnson, Martin, and Gordon were all able to return to the track, but each of them finished several laps down.

The lone Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to survive the carnage, Dale Earnhardt Jr., finished the race 24th after being involved in an incident in the closing laps of the race.

The Richard Childress Racing engine shop experienced problems as two or the RCR cars belonging to drivers Kevin Harvick and Jeff Burton both blew engines and were unable to finish the race. Kevin Harvick left the track soon after his engine failure and was able to tweet about the race from home having arrived there before the checked flag was waved. It was especially disappointing to team owner Richard Childress as the RCR camp had been on point all through Speedweeks. Jeff Burton had even taken first place in Gatorade Duel Qualifying race just three days prior.

Every Daytona 500 has its surprise, and this year’s model was no exception. On the 2nd attempt at a green, white, checker finish (NASCAR’s version of overtime), 20-year-old Trevor Bayne took the white flag and managed to hold off the likes of NASCAR superstars Carl Edwards and Kurt Busch (who had both been strong cars all day) to claim his first career victory. Through a record setting 74 lead changes amongst 22 different drivers, Bayne held on to win The Great American Race in only his second Sprint Cup Series start. Having just celebrated his 20th birthday one day prior Bayne received the ultimate birthday present finding himself in Victory Lane on NASCAR's biggest stage. Of course he had to get directions on where to park his car first.

Bayne won the race driving in the famous #21 car for the legendary Wood brothers who had picked him up to drive 17 races for them in the Cup Series this season. The Wood Brothers have not visited NASCAR Victory Lane in a decade. Bayne’s shocking Daytona 500 win was also the first win at the iconic track for the team since David Pearson took the checkers in 1976 sporting a paint scheme that looked eerily similar to the one Bayne drove to victory.

“Our first 500, are you kidding me?” said Bayne in Victory Lane amidst the party. “ Wow! This is unbelievable!”

The win isn’t a total surprise Bayne looked strong all week. He earned high praise from drivers like Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon. Gordon and Bayne spent most of their Gatorade Qualifier hooked up nose to tail fighting for the lead on Thursday.

“I’m very happy for him and think it’s great for our sport.” Gordon said when asked about Bayne's remarkable win in the garage area after the race.

Bayne joins the list of NASCAR greats to be known as a Daytona 500 winner. He also becomes just the seventh driver in NASCAR history to win his first race in the iconic event.

“It was too easy.” Bayne said smiling in victory lane. He said he kept waiting for someone to pass him, but that never happened. 2nd place finisher Carl Edwards did make a good run at it, but was unsuccessful.

The Reason Atlanta Has Just One Date in 2011

-It's all about the market
by Rachel Trimm

I awoke this morning to find most of NASCAR Nation in an uproar over the plans for the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Schedule. No one seemed all that thrilled with the idea of Kentucky getting a race date and Atlanta Motor Speedway losing one of it's dates. Fans were suggesting all kinds of other ideas of things that NASCAR should have done to keep to dares at Atlanta and give Kentucky it's date. This post is to explain the real reason NASCAR took Atlanta's date and didn't take a road course, Pocono, or some other location.

Road Course
All major motor sports series have a road course. In fact MOST major series have a schedule dominated by road racing. NASCAR is the exception to this. It's top tier series only has two road races in a 36 race schedule. In general the average NASCAR fan does not enjoy road racing, but in NASCAR's mind two races a year where the average fan isn't happy is an except-able casualty if it means bring new fans to the sport. Despite what you the fan might thing road racing is good for our sport and NASCAR doesn't want to lose the good thing they have going. Fans of other series often tune in or travel to road races just to see if "The NASCAR boys can do it right" and a lot of them see they can and dip their toes in the NASCAR's swimming pool a little deeper and start attending and watching other races. NASCAR has to keep reaching new fans otherwise when all of us die the sport is going to tank.  The race at Infineon Raceway in northern California is settled right smack in the middle of wine country and therefore brings a more high end crowd. I'm talking the ritsy-titsy, glit and glamor type. If you walk down pit lane at Infineon on arec day it's a whose who of Hollywood stars mixed with otherwell known people in business. NASCAR doesn't want to lose that market, even if they only show up once a year. Again, all about bringing new people into the sport.

Pocono has two dates and the racing stinks
That's true, but they still sell tickets!
take a look at this map

Where are most of the tracks located?
In the south. There are a few in the Midwest and three in the North East and that is one reason why NASCAR will not take a date from Pocono. It's all about expanding the market. The France family doesn't want NASCAR to just be a southern sport, they want it a part of American culture. They want is something as big as NFL football, which believe it or not also used to be just a southern sport.
from wikipedia

While some have called for NASCAR to take away one of the track's weekends, this is unlikely due to the Mattioli family's relationship with NASCAR and the track's proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City as well as the track's generally stronger ticket sales to most other speedways.
NASCAR wants to keep those races in the Northeast and Atlanta as they saw it was okay to lose a date because when you compare it to the nother southern dates it's spring event is the least profitable and provides the least chance of new fan involvement.

I'm not saying I agree with NASCAR (I'm a journalist in traing so I try hard to be objective.) I am just explaining why this decision was made. I don't think it was easy for NASCAR either. Atlanta has had two dates for over 50 years so I am sure they didn't make this decision lightly. It's just the way it is these days. I sure hope the racing at Kentucky is awesome because otherwise NASCAR is going to have a huge amount of grumpy people. . .  way more than they have right now.

The Heart Of NASCAR: Goodyear Support Our Troops Program

Here at The Spotter's Stand we strive to bring you content you won't find anywhere else and today we are expanding on that idea with another new article series. "The Heart of NASCAR" will be a monthly posting about some of the great philanthropic things going on in our sport. Over the next year we are going to look at driver's foundations and causes and other special charity events, but to get things rolling I wanted to do piece on something that;s very near and dear to my heart.

Goodyear Supports Our Troops

By: Rachel Trimm
We have all seen the tires that Goodyear has been supplying the teams with for the past three weeks, and some of us have gone over to Goodyear's site to see what all the commotion was about, but this week they let loose something new.

You can now send a video thank you message to someone serving or who has served for our country from your favorite NASCAR driver. It's so important to thank the men and women for their service and it warms my heart to see Goodyear go to such great lengths to get the word out.

We wouldn't be where we are today with out the sacrifices of these men and women and their family's and so I think Goodyear's got the right idea with having us all send a heartfelt thank you! The best part is you can show the troops who your favorite driver is and thank then for their service to America at the same time!

so get your butts over to http://www.goodyearsupportourtroops.com and send some love to those who are serving our country to protect our freedom.

Sources: Newman, Hamlin were fined

Sources: Newman, Hamlin were fined

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Ryan Newman and Denny Hamlin were the two Sprint Cup drivers fined by NASCAR for making disparaging comments about the series, multiple sources told ESPN.com.

Neither driver could be reached for comment.

It was reported earlier this week by The Associated Press that two star Cup drivers were fined, one as much as $50,000, for critical comments about the sport. NASCAR officials declined to name the drivers, but defended their right to maintain some sense of control for the sake of the brand.

"It is the sanctioning body's obligation on behalf of the industry and our fans to protect the sport's brand," spokesman Ramsey Poston said in a statement. "Any action taken by NASCAR has nothing to do with the drivers expressing an opinion -- it's focused on actions or comments that materially damage the sport.

"We have specifically discussed this in meetings with teams, drivers and stakeholders."

Newman was fined first and Hamlin second, the sources said. The sources would not confirm which statements made by the drivers were responsible for the fines, but both drivers have been outspoken on several issues.

Jeff Gordon Gets A Little Rowdy!

ONe day into the new blog called "The Spotter's Stand" and we already have news about a spotter! You just can't make this stuff up people!
Jeff Gordon Get's A Little Rowdy

By Rachel Ttimm

It was announced this morning that 4x Cup Champion Jeff Gordon is getting a new spotter starting this weekend at Pocono Raceway. This new additon to the #24 team is none other than former #18 spotter Jeff Dickerson.

Less than a week after being let go as spotter for the #18 car drivin by Kyle Busch, Dickerson sign a deal to be the spotter for the #24 car. As of now the details are unknown.

Steve Letarte says he hustled to hire Dickerson, whom he considers one of the best in the sport. Letarte says Dickerson will help the team close out victories — which Gordon has struggled to do this year.

Kyle Busch has often publicly credited Dickerson, who has worked at Hendick Motorsports previously, with many victories and TSS believes that this is the reason Letarte made such a big push to snap him up before other teams could even come close.

Shannon McGlamery will still maintain his duties as mechanic at Hendrick Motorsports.

So, do you think that this will help Jeff remove the giant goose egg from the win column?

Ray's Rant's: Americans Have Rights Ya' Know (yes even "rednecks")

NASCAR has fined at least two of its star drivers this season for making critical comments about the racing series and I've got a big problem with it! Before you read this blog please read the AP's report on the incedent.

Ray's Rant's
Americans Have Rights Ya' Know (yes even "rednecks")

By Rachel Trimm

NASCAR wouldn't be the first sport to fine participants for speaking critically of the sanctioning body, but they are the first on record to fine those involved without publicly disclosing the infraction and some limited details. What concerns me most about this instance is that no one knows what was said that warranted the fines. For all we know it was a comment about how so and so wore an ugly necktie at Indy! Reasonably speaking, it's not likely something so trivial, but you get my point.

Most bloggers outside of politics leave their views out of the posts they make, but I'm not going to tonight. I believe in standing up for what's important and the things I feel most passionate about. Today I want you to read the following realizing that I am being honest and really consider what I am saying.

Since when did it become legal to infringe on someone's freedom of speech? As long as the drivers in question didn't say anything slanderous ( Bill France has embezzled money) then they have the RIGHT to say what they want and NASCAR has no right to deduct income from anyone. If for some reason a driver did speak slander then NASCAR needs to follow the proper civil channels.

Freedom of speech is the freedom to speak without censorship or limitation, or both. The synonymous term freedom of expression  is sometimes used to indicate not only freedom of verbal speech but any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used. NASCAR Drivers, team owners ect are subject to these rights just the same as anyone else/

As long as what the drivers in question said was true (with few exceptions they have the RIGHT to say it. These exceptions include; National Security, Yelling "FIRE" in a crowded theater or infringements on copyrights.

This is why I think what was said does not count as "Hate Speech" wasn't slander/ NASCAR won't publicly admit what was said or what parties were involved/ Until this evening they didn't even have an article on their site about the incident and even now the article is buried under loads of somewhat irreverent news and human interest stories. To me, something just seems fishy about that. People who are doing wrong have nothing to hide.

Bottom line, NASCAR is in the wrong here and if I were these drivers I'd hook myself up with a lawyer and take them to school on this. I think that if public figures stood up for the First Amendment then more people would.

Fans are outraged by this latest incident by NASCAR that contradicts the "have at it boys" mentality. NASCAR excuses these fines and punishments by saying that they want to keep a clean image for the fans. They want a cooperate and family friendly product. Most fans hardly see this as a justification one fan wrote,

"It's NASCAR having more robots, now NASCAR is turning them all into robots."

Fans don't seem to want cooperate mouth pieces. Hopefully after reading this post you understand this isn't about keeping a clean image, this is about FREEDOM OF SPEECH! I implore these drivers to stand up for themselves and for our rights!

It's A Brand New Day!

Countdown 'Till Daytona: Jimmie Hasn't Done It All. . . Yet

RECENT EDIT!

While roaming the net this morning I ran into Jay Busbee's blog over on Yahoo Sports about things that happened in Homestead. I read through it until I got to this part where I had to pause and smile. ........
 ........
…And Gordo? Fastest Pit Crew of the Year! Now that was fulfilling, you know, as a Gordon fan. And by fulfilling I mean that it made me want to throw something heavy, preferably with a large glass component, ideally with a cathode ray tube, off of a small roof onto large pavement (timeouts just aren't doing it for me anymore). It made me want to choke Letarte (which would require both a ladder and a belt, but I might be able to pull it off with the proper guise).........
 ........
The fastest pit crew of the year? What? Was it based on a degree of difficulty scale? Because yeah, they did a great job if you factor in the fact that they had to perform a spring rubber and three wedge adjustments on every stop this year.........
 ........
But either way, suck on that JJ. Call me when you have four Cup trophies AND a FPCY on the mantel, then we'll talk about the greatest of all time. Umkay? . . .........
 ........
I didn’t plan this as part of our countdown this season, but I think it’s time we talk a little about Jimmie Johnson. If you were about to stop reading this post because you don’t want to read more about how “awesome” Jimmie Johnson is, I ask that you hold on a little longer. This isn’t one of those posts. Honestly, I have never written a blog like that, and don’t plan to start now.........
 ........
With all the media clearly in love with Jimmie, and so focused on all the records he’s set or broken seeing Jay’s blog this morning was a welcome refresher. The media wants us all to love Jimmie, and feeds us endless stats to justify it.....
 ........
While I will admit that Jimmie Johnson is talented, and has done great things for our sport, I'm not about to like someone just because the media crams him down my throat with my morning bagel!....
 ........
There’s plenty of things Jimmie Johnson and the 48 have done, but in this blog we are going to take a look at the things they HAVE NOT done! How’s that for a change of pace?....
 ........
First off, the 48 pit crew has won numerous awards, but they have yet to win the following....
 ........
-Pit Crew of the Year........
--The 48 crew has finished runner up for this award twice....
 ........
-Pit Crew Challenge........
--Past winners:
2008 Champion: #83 Red Bull Toyota
2007 Champion: #12 Alltel Dodge
2006 Champion: #1 Bass Pro Shops
2005 Champion: #9 Dodge/UAW Dodge

........
Jimmie Johnson has done many great things in the sport, but here’s a short list of things he has not done yet.........
 ........
-Won races at the following tracks........
-- Bristol Motor speedway ........ DANG IT! Achieved in 2010
-- Chicagoland Speedway........
-- Homestead-Miami Speedway........
-- Watkins Glen International Raceway........
-- Michigan International Speedway........
-- Infineon Raceway........ CRUD! Achieved in 2010 season
 ........
-Won a race on a road course........
Well he has taken this off the list. I better go find more things he has not accomplished yet!
 ........
-Won poles at the following tracks........
-- Bristol Motor speedway........
-- Darlington Raceway........
-- Infineon Raceway........
-- Texas Motor Speedway........
-- Michigan International Speedway........
-- Las Vegas Motor speedway........
-- New Hampshire Motor speedway........
 ........
- Win Nationwide Title........
-- He competed on and off in the series for 9 years........
 ........
-Finish Top five in Nationwide Points........
--His best pts finish in that series was 8th in 2001....
 ........
I’ve listed some things here as you can see. Sure it’s not much, but I like to keep things down to Earth. If you want to add anything else Jimmie Johnson and the 48 team have not done do so in the comment section. ....
 ........
Usually, I ask you guys to answer a question, but today I have two....
 ........
1.          Should Jimmie Johnson be listed as one of the all time greats? Why or why not?........
2.          Please rank the top five DRIVERS of all time in NASCAR to the best of your ability....
 ........
Think long and hard about this one guys. My answer is YES he should. I wrote the blog out of spite. Quite frankly, what the 48 team have been able to accomplish is remarkable, I just like to get people thinking, and stir the pot a little. So, put your bias hats aside for a min and think about it before you answer........
 ........
This raps up the day, have a great one!....

Countdown 'Till Daytona: Buy or Sell

Countdown 'Till Daytona: Buy or Sell

First off, sorry this is so late :)

As we all know today is Black Friday. The one day a year where people act like morons and show up at stores before the sun shines in an effort to get the best deal. I'm not really one of those people. I don't want anything bad enough to put up with the chaos they have been showing on the news all morning. I still think shopping is fun though, just not today. Do any of you go out and do Black Friday?

Following along with the theme of the day I thought that today we would play the BUY/SELL Game!

Here's how it works:
I'm going to give you a list of words, or phrases. Your job is to decide weather to buy or sell the idea or person.

You select BUY if....
A) You agree with the statement and believe it to be true
B) You think the person is going to be good next season

You select SELL if. . .
A) If you disagree with the statement
B) If you think the person is question is going to preform poorly next season.

Here we go!

Jeff Burton

Kyle Busch will win 5 or more races

Jeff Gordon will win a race this season

The Chase system

Carl Edwards will win a race

Martin Truex Jr

Joey Logano will win a race this season

All intermediate tracks should have progressive banking

Dale Earnhardt Jr will win a race this season

Banning testing has been good for the sport

Kurt Busch will work with Steve Addington

Mark Martin will retire at the end of 2010

Chad Knaus will try to sneak a jet engine into the garage area at Daytona

Kayne West will interrupt a post race press conference sometime this season

Jimmie Johnson will teach Tiger Woods how to back his car out of the driveway

Countdown 'Till Daytona: Thankful For Our Sport

Countdown 'Till Daytona: Thankful For Our Sport

As we noted yesterday, Thanksgiving is all about food, family and being thankful for the things we have. In this current economic crisis that's hard to do, and that carries over to NASCAR.

All season long I have read the personal gripes of fans across the country and have even spat forth a few of my own, but how many of us typed up that wonderful blog about the good things in NASCAR in 2009? I know for one, I only had one blog that talked about the good things happening in our sport (this excluded the blogs where I was happy a particular driver won a pole, race or championship) It's so easy to complain, but it can be just as easy to be grateful.

I know most of you are out with family today, and that's awesome. I'm currently enjoying a Cowboys victory waiting on turkey. Things take longer cuz we have to use a roaster over since our oven has been broken since last year :( That's why I am here typing.

In thing post I want us to talk about things in NASCAR we are thankful for. Post at least one thing you are thankful for in the sport from 2009.

The GUIDELINES
1. ______ Driver won a Championship is NOT allowed
2. ______ Driver won a pole/Race is NOT allowed
3.Try to make it something different that what others posted.
4. Add some pics and video if you want
5. ________Driver crashed is NOT allowed

Be aware that I will be keeping more of an eye on this post so don't think I won't notice. Tomorrow we will be talking COT so bring your thinking caps!

Here's mine
What thing is NASCAR are you most thankful for?

I am most thankful that Joey Logano is a walking, living breathing young man. I have never seen a crash like that at Dover, and it really did scare me. Joey is only a year younger than me, and to see that crash happen to someone my age scared me. I was wondering if he would get out of the car. . . it was intense! Thankfully he got out ok, and was only sore. It really makes me smile when I see the crash and realize how safe this new car is for drivers despite the car's other issues.

AND

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
